Project: Aikainen 3D-opera

On August 12, 2014

An opera by Miika Hyytiäinen

Aikainen [= “early/about time”], is a sensational experimental opera about time and its different aspects. Besides music theatre, Aikainen embraces elements of visual arts, performance art, poetry, and film. The text material combines prose and poetry by award-winning Finnish authors, among them Riikka Pelo, who won the prestigious Finnish literary prize Finlandia in 2013.

Musically, Aikainen is a confession of love to the human voice and its flexibility. Two on stage vocal artists and three opera singers on 3D-video provide the whole spectrum: From spoken singing to overtone singing and from cattle call cries to dramatic opera voice.

The composer uses the newest technology, like 3D-printed and electrical instruments and 3D video as a part of both the props and the music. A walk-in score presented on a Mobius strip brings a further dimensional element on stage and real-time composing during the performance.

Stage director Jaakko Nousiainen toys with the imagery evoked by the opera’s rich score to create an event where different layers of time become visible. Time seems to behave with no logic: The performers can grow old and become young again in an instant, reversing the order of generations.

Performers: Vocal artists and singers Frauke Aulbert and Annika Fuhrmann; 5-person instrumental group Varjo Ensemble; voiceover and real time composing Miika Hyytiäinen. In addition, opera singers Anu Komsi, Kaisa Näreranta and Tiina Sinkkonen perform in a 3D video that is part of the work.
